Word detectives search for clues in Grade 1!

Word study is an important element in our Language Arts lessons in Grade One. One central goal of word study is to guide students in spelling, decoding new words and improving word recognition speed. To accomplish this goal, we have fun transforming ourselves into detectives. The students explore words to discern the regularities that exist in the spelling system. We also look out for oddballs, words that do not follow the pattern. For example, last week we looked at words that had vowel-consonant-silent magic e, which make the long vowel sound appear and found oddballs like have, one, and love that have the visual pattern, but do not have the long sound. The Grade One detectives have discovered that finding clues and patterns in words is like piecing together a wonderful puzzle!
