Hands-on learning

A great way to get kids ready for writing is by creating lots of opportunities for manipulation, which strengthens hands and fingers. Aside for playdough and rice, in Nursery 4 we have started to experiment with shaving foam, kinetic sand, corn starch and water. The kids call these experiences making ‘magic potions’. What happens when we mix some of these textures together? Can we mix colours?  Why are some potions sticky and some not? Curiosity about new materials pushes even the most reluctant students to have a go, touching, stirring, or even just sniffing. The children like to think what powers their potions have and invent new ones by mixing textures. Open ended exploration… what fun!   Ms Nilva N4 Teacher
