Grade 5 Recipe
Take some red blood cells (strawberries), white blood cells (marshmallows), a lot of tiny sprinkles (platelets) and some plasma (pineapple juice). Whizz it all up in a blender and what do you get? A super sweet, rather pink smoothie that tasted delicious and taught us lots about the different parts of blood. Students had to imagine what blood cells might look like under a microscope, before discovering what they really looked like by investigating pictures of the real thing. Below are some of their before and after drawings. Who knew that blood could be so much fun?
