Job Description

The Udine International School is seeking a dynamic, flexible, highly capable and suitably qualified teacher for Science and/or Mathematics in our Middle School (ages 11-14) for the 2017-18 school year and beyond.

The teacher(s) will be responsible for teaching Science and Mathematics programs to all three grades (6, 7 & 8) of our Middle School as well as taking on the leadership role within this section of the school.

Teachers are expected to follow the school’s syllabus guidelines which are based on an international curriculum, as well as adhere to the school’s guidelines with regard to short, medium and long-term planning and student assessment. Teachers are also expected to involve themselves in extracurricular activities (including, but not limited to, day and overnight trips, in-school workshops and integrated projects with other subject areas) as well as participate in regular staff meetings and whole school professional development days.

The direct supervisor for this role is the school Principal.

The school is the newest member of the International Education Systems group and has a commitment to promoting international education within the school and across the group.

The school was accredited by the Council of International Schools in December 2015 and maintains a strong, ongoing commitment to the process of school improvement. Staff members will be expected to participate in professional development related to this aim.

The advertised position is full time with a daily teaching schedule contained within the Middle School hours of 08:10 to 15:50, Monday to Friday. The 2017-18 School Calendar will follow a similar organisation to the current school year, which can be  viewed on our website.

Essential Requirements

As well as a strong academic grounding in Education, the successful candidate for this role will be an enthusiastic educator with a demonstrated ability to improve student learning outcomes, along with the organisational skills required to successfully manage the teaching, planning and assessment load across the different subject areas required for this post. The teacher appointed to this role will also be someone who can quickly and successfully adapt to a new working environment and the culture of a non-English speaking country, while simultaneously managing the daily working demands of being a Middle School subject teacher and section leader in a fee-paying International school.

The teacher will also have well developed and efficient classroom management strategies that are appropriate for the stages of development for the age groups to be taught. Teachers must be willing to work as part of the Middle School team and contribute to the positive work place environment in the section. They will also demonstrate an understanding of, and support for, the School’s Mission and Vision and overall educational philosophy.

The teacher appointed to this position will be required to contribute to the school’s ongoing curriculum development and review in their subject areas.

Prospective Teachers must be English mother tongue (or have an equivalent level of spoken and written English) and hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree or equivalent diploma, preferably in Education, along with a teaching certification, as well as have at least four years of experience teaching in the Middle School age group.

Only candidates who have a prior established right (as well as the necessary, valid documentation to support this right) to work in Italy, will be considered for the advertised positions.

Contracts, Benefits & Housing

The contract conditions are governed by Italian law and salaries are taxed in accordance with Italian fiscal laws and where applicable, international bi-lateral conventions.

Salary levels will be set in accordance with the candidate’s qualifications and previous teaching experience and a salary and benefits indication will be communicated immediately to all shortlisted candidates.

Teachers moving to Udine to take up positions from outside the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, can benefit from a housing allowance and are eligible for a settling-in allowance, as well as transportation and baggage allowance.

The successful candidate will be offered a two (2) year contract, to commence in September 2017.

After having established official residency in Italy, Teachers can benefit from the Italian national health scheme.

The school also provides a hot lunch, prepared by the school kitchen, during the school week (Monday to Friday).

  1. A covering letter or personal statement of no more than two (2) pages which specifically addresses your suitability for the role advertised, based upon the School’s ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS for the post that are outlined above.
  2. Two professional referees including your current Head of School. Referees will be contacted prior to the signing of the contracts, including the request for a confidential written reference from the current Head of School. (Referees will not be contacted prior to candidates being notified that they have been shortlisted for a position).

  4. Information regarding eligibility to work in Italy. This may include a declaration that you are a citizen and/or hold a passport for a member state of the European Union, a current work permit or Permesso di Soggiorno for Italy, etc.

In order to comply with child safeguarding procedures, all shortlisted candidates will be required to provide a police clearance certificate from the relevant authorities in the county where they were employed prior to joining UIS. The school will also organize a police record check in Italy prior to arrival and reserves the right to contact any former employer listed on the candidate’s CV regarding suitability to work with children and professional conduct at that workplace.
